    TANGTSE MONASTERY

    The vast majority of tourists zipping between Leh and Pangong Tso drive straight past this small but vibrantly colourful monastery, home to the mystical 'talking statue' of Kyoba Rimpoche. Built into a rock-cleft beneath a fortress ruin, the site is just 300m off the main road, but essentially invisible as you pass. The main 1968 building was given its dazzling interior revamp in 2004, but the spooky original shrine room downstairs dates from before 1616 and retains smoke-darkened ancient murals.
